Having married into a Ukrainian family, I’m always interested in the diaspora wherever I encounter it.

I definitely did not expect to encounter it on a random motorcycle ride to Hunter, NY. But when I saw the street sign for “Ukraine Road” while speeding down Route 23A, I knew I had to stop for a look.

I wasn’t disappointed. The church structure and grounds of St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church are beautiful. I immediately thought of St. George’s Church in Drohobych, Ukraine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site I visited in 2017.

Sadly, the church was closed when I visited but I hope to return on a day when the doors are open.
