I pass PS89 every day on my bike ride to work, but the only time I’ve ever been inside was the evening of 9/11. NYC OEM watch command was temporarily located inside its cafeteria after 7WTC fell and I was staffing it for MTA.
I’ll never forget the strange and sad contrast of emergency workers dutifully working amid the child-sized lunch tables.
The official 9/11 Memorial is just down the block, but I think this little plaque says so much about that day.
